We’ve grown to love those stories of people overcoming the seemingly impossible to do the right thing. But, what about the heart-warming story of a child facing a similar scenario? Now is your chance to vicariously venture off to Northern England during the UK miners’ strike in the mid 80s and watch a motherless child (Billy) make his dream turn into reality as he trades in his boxing gloves for a pair of… ballet slippers.
The critically acclaimed and Tony Award-winning Billy Elliot the Musical–based on the book and screenplay written by Lee Hall– has come to town. Viewers will be inspired to follow their dreams as they watch Billy triumph over all the odd against him to pursue his newfound talent. Plus, who doesn’t want to listen to music by the extremely talented Sir Elton John?
You can catch a performance tonight at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas! (The musical is playing until June 19 and recommended for ages 8 and up.) Tickets start at $30. For more information, call 214/880-0202 or visit AT&T Performing Arts Center’s website.

Suddenly this summer … That’s right. It’s June, and somehow we made it from the flash ice storm that threatened the Super Bowl to sticky car seats and sunscreen in no time at all.
But your kids haven’t slowed down just because that thermometer is approaching triple figures. For your sake, here are a few ways to keep yourselves (and the kiddos) entertained this weekend—without having to hose down every hour.
Take a dive (figuratively) and cool off in the deep blue sea when you check out Sea Rex: Journey to a Prehistoric World at Dallas’ Museum of Nature and Science. You’ll take a trip back to the days long before dinosaurs roamed the earth, and get to know new beasts such as the “eye lizard” Ophthalmosaurus. No snorkels necessary.
Or if you’d like to brush up on more artistic pursuits, head over to The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth on Saturday for Drawing from the Collection for Children. Kids will make their own sketches of works from the collection, instructed by Linnea Glatt.
You can also get your art on at the Dallas Museum of Art during Arturo’s Art & Me. Saturday’s theme is Squiggle, Dribble, Splat, and you and your kiddo will explore works of art, read a related story and make your own related masterpiece.
Stay cool, folks!

In Texas, it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t thoroughly enjoy Tex-Mex cuisine. After all, what’s not to love? Whether you eat tacos or a simple pico de gallo with chips, the colorful combination of fresh food and spices tastes so wonderful.
That’s why if you are in the mood for Tex-Mex tonight, Casa Milagro in Richardson is a great option. (The word “milagro” is the Spanish word for miracle.) For starters they have an outdoor patio, a bar area and televisions (for those who can’t miss the Mavericks game). Plus, you can munch on chips and homemade salsa while waiting for your meal.
So what to order? Commence your food adventure with a bowl of tortilla soup (with homemade chicken broth) or bean and cheese nachos. When it comes to entrees, some of my personal favorites include the house specialty, Chile Rellenos con pollo (fire-roasted poblano peppers topped with Ranchera sauce and cheese) or the Milagro Tacos (two tacos prepared quesadilla style with Monterrey jack cheese, cobbo style lettuce, fajita beef or chicken and carmelized onions). Also, if you like seafood, there are different options with shrimp and fish. And, no matter how full you think you are, there is always room for dessert like Tres leches cake or you can refresh your palette with coconut ice cream.
Let your taste buds experience a miraculous meal!

What is happiness? To your kiddos, it might be tee ball games, or having the day off from school, or even your world-famous grilled cheese sandwich. To Charlie Brown’s friend Linus? It’s a blanket.
In Happiness Is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown, you can revisit Charles Schulz’ lovable characters as they tell the story of a most-cherished possession. After years of toting around his security blanket, Linus learns his grandma is coming to visit—with every intention of ridding him of his childish habit. As the arrival looms, the Peanuts gang all try to help him cope without his fuzzy crutch. In her usual style, Lucy uses psychiatric techniques, and Snoopy merely wants the blanket for himself. Charlie Brown, with his heart of gold, hates to see his friend suffer.
The moral of the story is that everyone has a “security blanket” in some form or fashion—whether it’s friends, family or a collection of baseball cards—and maybe a little security isn’t such a bad thing. The film was co-written by Schulz’ son, and it will give you a heartwarming and humorous trip through nostalgia-ville. Pick it up tonight on DVD or Blu-ray.

Put on that poodle skirt and open wide! Well, no one at Molly’s Burgers is going to kick you out if you’re not decked out in your pins and crinolines. They will, however, give your kiddos a free meal when you get one for yourself.
At this retro joint serving up homestyle delights, you can unhinge your jaw to try The “Molly” burger: served up with a grilled hot dog, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, bacon, cheddar and spicy mayo. Or stick to your summer diet by munching on a grilled chicken sandwich. For the whole table, tasty sides include homemade onion rings, fried zucchini, Cajun tator tots, salad and more.
Tots 12 and younger can get a hot dog, corn dog, hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken nuggets or grilled cheese (all served with a drink and fries, tots, onion rings or chips) … all for free! Top off the meal with a refreshing ice cream float, cake balls or let them surprise you with the dessert of the day.
Stop by the Arlington location until 9pm tonight.

It’s officially here. No, not the release of Kung Fu Panda II. Summer. Though we’ve all been soaking up the sun plenty the last several weeks (well, ignore the tennis ball-sized hail and flash floods), Memorial Day marks the official beginning of the summer: no school, pool parties—the things that really matter.
One way to get in the patriotic spirit this weekend is to stop by the CityArts Festival in Fair Park. On Saturday night, you can watch fireworks from the rooftop! What a bang.
If you’re in the mood for music, come out to the Irving Arts Center tonight for an Americana Patriotic concert, performed by the Irving Chorale. Musical selections include The Last Words of David and more.
Come Monday, wake up early for a parade, but don’t end the festivities there! Head over to the Dallas Arboretum for a Children’s Concert with funny guy Eddie Coker (bring a picnic!). Farther west, you can make a splash at The Keller Pointe by participating in their Memorial Day Festivities, which include games, competitions, music and prizes.
