Kristy Alpert files this report:

Although he’s been nicknamed “the bad boy of cuisine,” we know he’s a softy deep down (we once heard him talk about his precious little daughter)! For one night only, Anthony Bourdain will make an appearance on Thursday, October 27 at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas at 8pm.

This chef, author, doting dad, and host of The Travel Channel’s No Reservations will delight audiences with his hilarious insights, candid behind-the-scenes stories about his travels and work, and will even answer questions from the audience.

Details below.

Bourdain, the Chef‐at‐large at New York’s famed bistro Les Halles, is the author of the bestselling Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, an upfront, hysterical, and sometimes shocking portrait of life in restaurant kitchens that has been translated into over 28 languages. His book, A Cook’s Tour, published in conjunction with his series on the Food Network, was also a bestseller in the U.S. and the U.K. His newest best‐seller, Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook, is a delectable journey that explores the changes in the subculture of chefs, cooks, the restaurant business and for Anthony himself since Kitchen Confidential.

A contributing authority for Food Arts Magazine, his work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times and Gourmet. He has also been profiled by CBS Sunday Morning and Nightline including an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. No Reservations, nominated for an Emmy and widely popular all over the world, continued its seventh season July 11th.
Tickets are already on sale, and range from $30‐ $165 for VIP packages. Tickets will be available through Ticketmaster by phone at 800/745‐3000 or online at Ticketmaster.com.

A limited number of VIP tickets will be available, this includes: premiere seating, an exclusive meet and greet session with Bourdain featuring hors d’oeuvres, a photo opportunity, a limited edition Anthony Bourdain tour poster and a limited edition tour VIP laminate.

Copies of Bourdain’s new book, Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook, along with other titles from his back catalog, will be available for purchase on site.

Cool outlines

Ever tried to make some cool drawings or other art forms of the kids with little success? (Hey, it’s not our fault if we weren’t born with the Monet or Picasso gene!) Well, don’t fret because silhouette artist, Karl Johnson is coming to Dallas. With countless mentions in magazines and a celebrity client list that includes Reese Witherspoon and Tom Cruise, you won’t be disappointed with his hand cut pieces of art.

The best part is each silhouette creation is only $25 and only take a few minutes to make (so your little one and you can enjoy the rest of your day)!

We all know that allergies are not any fun! So that’s why we were happy to find out that Whole Foods Market Preston Forest in Dallas will offer a free Children’s Food Allergy Cooking Class on Aug 25. During the hour long class, which begins at 10am, parents can learn all about preparing alternative delicious lunches and snacks for kids to take to school. The recipes will avoid the top eight allergens and each participant will get to sample some food (yes!). Plus, you’ll get to take home an allergy-free cook book so you can recreate the different recipes for your kids!

Anyone in the community is welcome to attend! Please send an email to: foodallergy@childrens.com by Aug 18.

Burgers of La La Land

28:

When it comes to burgers, I am usually a traditional girl. My favorite components are the meat, cheese and the bun. So, when my brother told me about LA Burger, a new place that opened up in Valley Ranch that puts kimchi in their burgers, I was quite perplexed and even slightly skeptical.

Immediately upon entering through the door, you feel as if you are in LA with the SoCal-style music playing in the background and the words “Discover the Los Angeles food scene” painted on the wall. One of the owners, Ben Lee, greeted us and was able to suggest some menu items including the LA Burger, which includes an Angus patty, sauteed Korean spicy cabbage, teriyaki sauce, jalapeños, cheese and a fried egg.

Upon the initial bite, you are able to taste the fusion of flavors and have a burger experience like no other. (Ben told us they are the first in the Dallas area to offer a kimchi burger.) To accompany your entree, order the off-the-menu K-Town Fries (fries topped with onion, cilantro, kimchi and other delicious ingredients).

Not in a burger and fries kind of mood? The restaurant also offers Asian tacos and hogi’s (hoagies), salads and cheese steak.

Warning: This is a great spot for a no-frills date night, but get ready to get a little messy and indulge LA-style!

Surf and Turf

30:

Alas, summer is already here and has made its presence known. With temperatures in the scorching 100s, we are left dreaming of a summer vacation on a tropical island (hello, ocean!) or even Antarctica at this point. Since many of us can’t escape the heat for an extended amount of time, we can at least dine like we are on vacation.

The casual eatery, Rockfish, has introduced some new menu items for the summer including gluten-free ahi tuna tacos served on cucumber slices with wasabi aioli and mango ginger relish, the Field & Stream (their version of Surf and Turf) and Colossal Sea Scallops.

With locations all over the DFW area, it shouldn’t be too hard to dive into food oblivion!

Aloha to summer!

Summer is officially here (as of yesterday)! Not that we needed a calendar to let us know—the scorching temps as of late have us yearning for poolside play ASAP. So how about heading to Hawaiian Falls for a bit of H2-ohhhh!

If you’re an avid reader of our mag, you may have seen our current Water Worlds feature rounding up some of the area’s hottest spots to cool off. But we did make a boo-boo—we stated that the price of admission for Hawaiian Falls is $13.99 for you and your child if you mention the Maui Moms’ Club. This is incorrect. The Maui Moms’ Club is a special program on Tuesdays only. A discounted rate (free children’s admission with a purchase of a regular adult admission) is only available for children on Tuesdays, and only if you go present a coupon which can be downloaded by clicking here. This coupon allows children to get in free with the purchase of a regular price admission ($23.99) on Tuesdays before 12pm. There is also a free craft activity each Tuesday. Our sincerest apologies!
