Retail as Art: See the Winning Photo

24:

Back in March you may have seen our post about the 5th annual Retail as Art Scholarship Contest in Dallas. Local students came out in force to submit their unique interpretations of retail as art. From tight shots of zippers to artsy approaches to neckties, the competition was fierce. We thought you could use a little eye candy for your Friday, so here’s the first place photo “Knot Royale” by Michael McCallum of Cistercian Preparatory School. Clearly, our Dallas-area teens are a talented bunch. We can’t wait to see what the 2014 contest brings. Enjoy!

2 Must-Attend Events on Thursday

22:

This Thursday, shop for handmade gifts from local Etsy vendors and listen to Texas-born music at a new concert series at Klyde Warren Park.

Etsy Handmade Gifts & Mini-Market
If you’ve been looking for an excuse to visit West Elm at Mockingbird Station, here’s cause for a trip. The local Etsy vendors will be selling their handmade and vintage wares during a small market inside West Elm from 6–8pm on Thursday. You’ll get refreshments, gift bags and ideas for making your own handmade gifts, and don’t miss the accessory workshop for do-it-yourselfers. Raffle tickets to win a prize package from West Elm are $5, and proceeds will go toward the Genesis Women’s Shelter.

Klyde Warren Park Concert Series
Klyde Warren Park is debuting a new concert series called Music Road Third Thursdays, featuring performances by Texas-based singers and songwriters under the Muse Family Performance Pavilion. Listen to the first performance on May 23, by Garrett Lebeau from 7:30–10pm (yes, tomorrow is the fourth Thursday, but don’t let that confuse you.) Austin-based Music Road Records will present concerts on the third Thursday monthly through October.

Prosperity Place Fun Run & Family Festival

16:

We’re sure that Dr. Price with Price Family Orthodontics in Frisco is a perfectly nice man, but crowds of kids at the Prosperity Place Fun Run & Family Festival on Saturday will be lining up at the dunking booth for a chance to send Dr. Price falling into the pool of water.

Join Prosperity Place for the sixth annual family fair with the aforementioned dunking booth, music, food and games from 8–11am at Frisco Square. Ready your running shoes or your wheels for the 1K and 5K runs. Register is $30 for the 5K. The 1K is $20 for individuals or free for families of kids with special needs.

Prosperity Place is a nonprofit that provides financial assistance to children with special needs for therapy when families cannot afford it, helps them to find resources, and gives informational workshops.

2 Ways to Give Back This Week

posted by on 2013.05.08, under Charity
08:

We’re always on the lookout for ways to teach the kids about the importance of volunteerism and giving back to the community. This week you can lead by example with these two opportunities by way of the Volunteer Center of North Texas and – your mailman.

Stamp Out Hunger
Mail trucks will be riding a lot heavier on Saturday, May 11 as they make their pick-ups for the Stamp Out Hunger food drive benefiting children and seniors in need.

How to contribute? Fill a sturdy bag, or paper sack available at your local post office, with non-perishable items. Set the bags near your mailbox on Saturday before your usual mail delivery time, and your letter carrier will gather the sacks to deliver to the North Texas Food Bank and Tarrant Area Food Bank.

So let the kids help you pick out foods such as cereals, peanut butter, baby formula or canned meats, soups, vegetables and fruit, or pick up ready-made Stamp Out Hunger bags at local Kroger stores.

Donate a Day’s Wages
The Volunteer Center of North Texas is declaring today, May 8, as Donate a Day’s Wages to Charity Day and encouraging families to donate the equivalent of one day’s pay or one workday of your time volunteering.

Why give? The VCNT recruits volunteers to keep more than 2,500 nonprofits in North Texas running smoothly, and the center recently launched their family volunteering program that targets students in K–fifth grades. Stay tuned for education-focused and interactive events and ongoing opportunities in the coming months.

4 Reasons to Explore DFW on Saturday

03:

This Saturday, take the family out to Dallas’ new amusement park, and to celebrate Asian cultures, cheer on the jockeys and horses racing in the Kentucky Derby, and cavort with fellow Star Wars fanatics.

Opening of Summer Adventures in Fair Park
See the more than 50 street entertainment acts planned for the weekend and be one of the first to ride the 500-foot-tall Top o’ Texas Tower, go boogie boarding on the FlowRider, positively soaked on the Log Flume at Dallas’ newest amusement park. Admission includes unlimited rides on all except the Sky Coaster, and it also gets you free entry to Texas Discovery Gardens and the Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park.

May the 4th (And Comics) Be With You
We love puns, especially those that tickle our fancy for favorites like Star Wars. Let the kids attain the force at two locations celebrating this special day.
At LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Grapevine, help build a LEGO spaceship, take photos with storm troopers from 3–8pm on Saturday and 11am–6pm on Sunday, and please please, if you have a costume, come dressed as your favorite character for the costume contest.
Sci-Tech Discovery Center in Frisco will have a Save the Ewok Wow Lab, Star Wars-themed experiments, crafts and games. Kids dressed in Star Wars costumes get in free.
And perhaps by coincidence (we think not), Saturday is also Free Comic Book Day. Visit freecomicbookday.com to find a comic book store near you and stop in for a free comic book of Star Wars or whatever other superheroes your kids adore most. Another good reason? Because Hugh Jackson/Wolverine is telling you to (see his video message).

Celebrate the Kentucky Derby
Do you love horses and can’t wait for the Kentucky Derby? For those reasons or just for an excuse to wear a darling, large hat, head to Prestonwood Polo and Country Club’s Polo on the Lawn in Oak Point on Saturday. Watch the derby race as well as a live polo match, the kids can enjoy a bounce house and face painting, and the whole family can compete for prizes in costume, picnic and tailgate contests judged by a celebrity panel.
If all that horse racing inspires you to get up and running, join the Derby Day 5K, one-mile fun run and festival at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano.

Asian festivals
The Crow Collection of Asian Art in Dallas is hosting its AdventureAsia family day from 10am–2pm with kite- and fan-making activities, family yoga, face painting, storytelling and a family writing workshop. Best of all you can join elementary-aged sisters Isabelle and Katherine and more members of the Keiki Club in a workshop to make origami ornaments. Proceeds from their ornaments benefits Living Water International, a Houston-based charity that drills water wells in developing countries. (Stay tuned for the Crow’s big Asian festival on May 18).
For families closer to Collin County, head to Plano’s Haggard Park on Saturday for the 10th annual AsiaFest for dance performances, martial arts demos, cultural exhibits, ethnic foods and kids activities presented by the Celebrating Asian American Heritage Foundation.

Miniature Gardens, Huge Impact

Miniature gardens are all the rage and Amy Kate with Amy Kate Gardens is cornering the market here in Dallas-Fort Worth. This Thursday, April 25th, join Amy Kate at Hotel ZaZa for the Amy Kate Gardens launch where you can make a garden of your own, learn how to get involved in the miniature garden biz and do some good for local children in foster care.

Arrive around 7PM for the pre-event where Amy Kate will provide supplies for participants who will then choose a child from the list and and create a whimsical garden to be gifted and cared for by the child. Amy Kate says giving children in foster care something personal to care for can have more impact than we realize.

Following the pre-event, Amy Kate will give a presentation on the Miniature Gardening trend and offer up suggestions on how to turn Terrariums and Miniature Gardening in to your own business venture.
To RSVP to the event or get more information on Amy Kate Gardens visit amykategardens.com.
