Take time this week to impart a love for reading to your kiddos by celebrating Children’s Book Week. This national celebration is focused on developing a love for reading in our youth and observing the life-changing potential of a book during a young person’s formative years. Better world books offers up these suggestions for celebrating Children’s Book Week (but feel free to celebrate all year long):
- Buy a book from BetterWorldBooks.com. With every book purchased, they donate a book to someone who needs it. The vast majority of donations goes to Books for Africa and Feed the Children.
- Pick out one of your (or one of your parents’) favorite books from childhood and introduce it to your kid at bedtime.
- Spend some time at your local library. Even a few minutes here and there in our busy schedule will help instill a lifelong love of books.
- Pen your own children’s book to read to your kids. Have them also write their own to read to you, too!
- Pick out 5 books, either from your own collection or from a book store, to donate to literacy campaigns throughout the world.
Better World Books is offering various specials and discounts this week in honor of Children’s Book Week. Pick out a few books and celebrate reading every day of the year.

Stop by the soccer fields at the Town North YMCA this Saturday, April 7th, to purchase lemonade from philanthropic Dallas kids working with the Lemons to Aid organization. All proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross and used to aid in local tornado relief for those devastated by the recent storms. And, everyone who donates will receive a pay if forward “PUCKER Up” bracelet! This is a great opportunity to give to local families in need while providing a teaching opportunity about giving back to your kids. The lemonade stand will be open for business from 11AM-1PM. Be sure to check out the Lemons to Aid organization at lemonstoaid.org. There are numerous ways for your child to get involved and start making an impact on the community.

When it comes to clothing, it can be considered a necessity, but for those in less fortunate situations it is a privilege. Often times it’s easy to forget that there are many kids around the world that don’t have apparel. Help break the cycle of poverty by purchasing a t-shirt or hoodie from Sevenly. Shirts come in gray, black and red for $22 and black hoodies are $35. Plus, purchases will supply seven kids in Bolivia clothes.

When you do good, you feel good. Pack some philanthropy in to your weekend with some of these fun activities … all of which give back.
You can start off your Saturday by taking a trip back in time. At Breakfast with the Stars 2011 at the Tarrant Area Food Bank, you can brunch with some of your favorite childhood heroes, from Spiderman to Tweety Bird to Cinderella (you know you’ve always wondered what it’s like to dance in a glass shoe!). Chat with real-life heroes such as firefighters and athletes, and check out martial arts demos and interactive exhibits from the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and more. Proceeds benefit the food bank’s BackPacks for Kids program.
In Big D, head over to White Rock Lake Dog Park for the Raise the Woof Pup Rally. You’ll join your neighbors in the lake’s centennial celebration, with live music, agility courses and pet-related vendors. Benefits the dog park.
Lastly, to get your blood flowing Saturday morning, lace up those sneaks and head over to McKinney’s Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary for Take a Hike! for Your Community. Take in the beautiful scenery as you walk at your own pace, all the while raising money for The Heard and Volunteer McKinney Center. Continental breakfast and giveaways included.
