Update: Ghost in a Body mom, Julie Hersh, on Dr. Oz

You may have read about Dallas mom Julie Hersh in our May 2010 feature, Ghost in a Body, by Shelley Hawes Pate (if not, it’s an excellent read…click here to read it). Shelley profiles a mom who tried to commit suicide…three times. In her own garage, no less. It turns out that Julie, like 21 million others, suffers from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). What saved her is the topic of Dr. Oz’s show slated for this Wednesday, January 25 at 4pm on ABC. We won’t give away too much, but we will tell you it’s a highly controversial (and seemingly dated) treatment that has people up in arms.

Support your local artist … especially when she’s forgoing afternoons on the playground for her craft.

Local student Anna Nguyen, a sixth grader at Wylie’s Davis Intermediate School, was selected out of tens of thousands as one of 36 finalists competing to have their handiwork reproduced on a Heinz Ketchup bottle. Want to see her drawings stand the test of time? The fate of Anna—and her handiwork—is up to you! Check out her work and vote for her here. Contest closes April 11.

Why launch ping pong balls into the air … when you could send a basketball flying?

Kids will get the chance to do just that during the Design Squad Nation Build Big Contest, where kids are invited to super-size activities for Design Squad Nation, a new show on PBS KIDS GO! From building a PVC Kayak to an enormous catapult, nothing is off limits.

It’s all about thinking outside the box. Kids can work with grandparents, neighbors, friends—anyone with a little imagination—and pick an activity (such as building a rubber band car) from the Design Squad Nation website. Step two? Make it bigger. Videos are uploaded to YouTube, and the lucky winner will get a camera to document future builds for the DSN website.

The contest opens today, so get building!

Even Monet had to get his start somewhere. …

The Village at Fairview recently announced the winners of its “Barricade Design Contest,” in which students from Allen, McKinney and Lovejoy in grades 9-12 turned in artwork based on a variety of themes. The winning artwork will be displayed on 12-foot by 24-foot storefront graphics throughout the shopping center, so stop by to see it!
