Grill-to-go

With the temps finally going down here we can all finally enjoy the fresh air from the comfort of our back porch. Yeah, that place where you bought cute outdoor cushions for furniture you never sit on because it’s been a summer to forget.  Go pay a visit to those dead plants in the cute pots and spruce things up because it’s time to have a BBQ! (Yes, in Texas BBQ can mean both the food group and a gathering of people.) If you would rather just enjoy the company of others and your hubby would rather watch the game without worrying about over or under cooking the burgers call up The Hamburger Man. Yup, this guy will come to your home and set-up his grill to prepare hotdogs, burgers, chicken and other sides for your next outdoor party. You leave the cooking and cleaning to him while you enjoy those outdoor seating cushions.

Beauty school hang-out

Aveda Institute Dallas (shopsatparklane.com)

“Say what?” was my response when a staffer here at DallasChild told me about her $15 haircut at the Aveda Institute at Park Lane. I mean seriously? Yes, seriously she got a haircut that included a hand, neck and scalp massage for $15. Yes, her stylist was a student, but you don’t feel like you’re in a beauty school. No, this facility is spacious and sleek buzzing with elements you expect from Aveda.

Said staffer said the appointment lasted about an hour and a half during which her stylist that was a 3-tier student (there are 4 tiers) listened to what she wanted, communicated it to her instructor and then executed the haircut. During the conditioning process, the stylist also gave her a hand massage. Once the cut was complete the student’s instructor came by to analyze how she had done and made a few revisions to the haircut. The staffer said she had a good experience overall and would visit again.

You do go in wondering what might happen as you sit in beauty chair. Will you whirl around with cued fans, shining lights and “awes” from the entire salon or will you whirl around in an execution chair wishing you could have a do-over.
Well, there are no do-overs at beauty school, but it’s a different and wallet-friendly alternative for your hair upkeep. Call to make your appointment (214/363-1291) and give it a shot. They have a menu of services offered that include manicures, pedicures and massages. p.s. If you want to tip your student stylist make sure to bring along some cash.

OU/Texas Cheat Sheet

In case you’ve been under a pile of laundry it’s OU/Texas weekend in Dallas. The two teams are meeting in the middle at the State Fair of Texas for the annual Red River Rivalry game. For those of you who listen to Dora on the radio and have the Disney channel on even though the kids aren’t in the room, here’s a little insider sports scoop that will have your husband wondering what you did with his wife and your kids looking at you funny.

This is an easy thing to drop-in during conversation – both teams are undefeated and it’s sure to be and offensive showdown. Here’s where you can really show-off: OU has been trying to escape the Big 12 Conference and head to the Pac 10 (now Pac 12), but that conference didn’t want them without the University of Texas. You see, Texas created this “Longhorn Network” that I’m really not sure who watches. Either way ESPN is giving them A LOT of money and the other football conference around the country want a piece of it, but Texas says, “heck -no”. So OU needs UT and UT needs OU. The college football scene is changing and everyone is racing to join the best conference. Soon there will be four super conferences and nobody wants to be left out.

Okay now onto some football. The quarterback (QB for short) for OU is Landry Jones (named after the infamous Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry) and the Texas QB is Case McCoy (younger brother of former Texas QB, Colt McCoy). The top receivers (guys who catch the football) are Ryan Broyles for the Sooners and Jaxson Shipley for the Longhorns (his brother, Jordan Shipley also played for Texas and was the receiver for Colt McCoy) – your husband is really going to lose it after you say that.

Both schools have lots of school pride. They have sayings that are part of their vocabulary. Instead of saying a simple hello it’s, “Boomer Sooner” for OU and  “Hook ‘em Horns” for Texas. The Crimson Red and Burnt Orange will collide at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday at 11am. So stay away from that entire region, including Northpark Mall and the Galleria because the sorority girls and moms who came down or up for the game actually came to town to go shopping.

So there you have it. Just drop in a few of those football facts as you place the hot wings on the table in front of the guys . But be warned you may have to clean up the spilled dip that hit the floor along with your husband’s mouth. Good game.

P-Rated

Have you heard about the latest online addiction? No it’s not X-rated…it’s P-rated and totally legal. Pinterest is taking over computers around the nation. Women everywhere are spending hours on this creative hub, collecting images of things that inspire them; photography, interior decor, recipes, diy crafts, travel destinations, you name it Pinterest has it. Essentially you request an invite into this creative club and a few days later you get your Pinterest pass and you’re in! Then you create boards for different categories and start pinning images you come across that just speak to you. Your children may wonder where mom is (hiding in the closet with the computer pinning away of course) and your husband may get suspicious of your increased computer activity. If he takes it away, don’t worry there’s a Pinterest app for that. But be warned you may get overwhelmed by all of the possibilities and soon you will have to accept that you will never attempt half of the diy ideas you come across, nor will you cook that fancy recipes you find…oh and your house will probably never look like the ones in the photos, but hey a girl can dream! Happy pinning!

Dallas Arboretum

October is here and so is the cool weather! It actually feels a little like fall, but better it tastes like fall too! Hello pumpkin spice latte, I’ve missed you. Mmm I could drink one of those a day if it was deemed appropriate or if I had stock in Starbucks. I know I can’t wait to pick up a hot cup and stroll through the Arboretum’s pumpkin patch one day soon. The place is like a pumpkin wonderland. They call it the Storybook Pumpkin Village and rightly so. It has four walk-through houses made out of pumpkins that you can actually walk through! They get their inspiration from children’s books that feature pumpkins and decorate the entire place with thousands of pumpkins that guests can pick out and purchase. This is a do-not miss event for any age. Grab the kiddos and have a “latte” fun at the only pumpkin village in the world! Now through Nov. 23, daily 9am-5pm.
