When it comes to clothing, it can be considered a necessity, but for those in less fortunate situations it is a privilege. Often times it’s easy to forget that there are many kids around the world that don’t have apparel. Help break the cycle of poverty by purchasing a t-shirt or hoodie from Sevenly. You may have read about Dallas mom Julie Hersh in our May 2010 feature, Ghost in a Body, by Shelley Hawes Pate (if not, it’s an excellent read…click here to read it). Shelley profiles a mom who tried to commit suicide…three times. In her own garage, no less. It turns out that Julie, like 21 million others, suffers from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). What saved her is the topic of Dr. Oz’s show slated for this Wednesday, January 25 at 4pm on ABC. We won’t give away too much, but we will tell you it’s a highly controversial (and seemingly dated) treatment that has people up in arms.

So it’s official, Trader Joe’s has found spaces to set up shop in the Dallas/Fort Worth area including Dallas and Plano. (The Fort Worth location was announced before these additions.) The reasonably-priced Californian grocery chain offers a variety of their own products … and, by that, we mean a lot!

Why are we so excited? They offer a bunch of cheeses, meats, prepared foods (Turkey pretzel bread sandwich? Yes, please.), seasonal products like pumpkin cheesecake and other yummy items. Plus, parents will love the economical Charles Shaw wine, which is affectionately nick-named as Two Buck Chuck.

To Santa or not to Santa? That is the question. You’re thinking about it, but those lines, the people, the crying…maybe you just won’t do it this year. Oh but, your kids would be so disappointed. How will Santa know what they want for Christmas?! Well, we’ll give you a little secret. The Village at Fairview has a unique sign-up system that allows you to get in line online with a click of a button. You’ll then be entered into a “virtual line” for Santa photos. Rather than waiting in long lines to see Santa, guests are notified via text or voice message of the time they need to arrive for their visit. Looking to give back this holiday season? Well, your family can eat, drink and be giving tonight at The Purple Cow on Preston and Royal in Dallas. From 5–8pm, bring your kids to eat dinner and choose a pre-purchased toy to donate to Toys for Tots.

You can also listen to a Marine from Toys for Tots speak about value of giving to those in need, and enjoy a visit from Santa. If you eat lunch or dinner today at The Purple Cow at Preston and Royal, make sure to mention Wee Volunteer and 15% of your meal will be donated to the non-profit organization.
