Events: Lonestar Christmas at the Gaylord Texan Resort

12:

Christmas Day may be more than a month away, but the bells are already ringing inside the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine. Make this year one for the scrapbooks and take the family out for a unique holiday experience. The Gaylord’s Lone Star Christmas has 1.5 million lights, 12,000 ornaments, a 54-foot-tall rotating Christmas tree (not to mention the other sparkling and glittery trees around the resort), several miniature train sets and a life-sized gingerbread house.

You could easily spend most of your time looking at all of these displays, but there is more holiday fun to be had with DreamWorks characters from Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and Shrek. Meet Gingy at his decorating workshop and choose to make one of several options including a traditional gingerbread house, a train, Christmas tree or a whole gingerbread family complete with a candied dog and cat.

Follow the signs upstairs to the Kung Fu Panda snow tubing, open daily from 10am–9pm. Climb up the steps with your tube and remember to tuck in your feet on the way down. Ride in your own tube or a double tube, depending on your child’s height.

Then bundle up for a walk through the ICE! exhibit with ice sculptures made from two million pounds of ice. The colorful displays follow the story line of the television short film Merry Madagascar. It’s only 9 degrees in the ice sculpture exhibit so bring close toed shoes, hats and gloves, especially if you want to slide down the 20-foot-tall ice slides (which, of course, you do). The resort will also provide long, winter coats.

For ticket prices and more information on these activities, call 817/778-2000 or visit christmasatgaylordtexan.com. You don’t have to rent a room to enjoy any of the festivities, but if you did, you could easily spend all weekend roaming the massive resort. The exhibits, activities AND Santa Claus will be at the Gaylord until January 1, 2013, including holidays.
